The vast majority of the tuna that we buy is caught by one of two approved fishing methods either the purse seine or pole & line method. A brief explanation of these fishing methods is given below.

Purse seine method - purse seine fishing is a consistent and efficient method, enabling fishing vessels to catch and freeze large quantities of tuna.  Purse-seine vessels fish either by spotting free swimming schools of tuna or by utilising floating objects that attract fish, either with natural or man-made objects such as fish aggregating devices (FADs).

Pole & Line method - In pole and line fishing, tuna are caught one-by-one using a hook attached to a line and pole.  Pole and line fisheries operate in various locations around the world including Japan, Indonesia and The Maldives and can be technologically advanced commercial operations or smaller scale or more artisanal in nature.
